We have a new logo!

It’s strange to make such a big change after 3 years of proudly wearing Pat, Phil and Ash, designed by the amazing Miss Bad Child and Mark Glasgow. We love them and we are very proud of our origin story.

It took a long time for us to make this change. It came out of many discussions with our regular attendees and reflections about what we want to show to the rest of the community.

We wanted a logo that pays homage to mainstream martial arts culture while making it our own and still being playful and irreverent. The design process forced us to think hard about our values as a club and we hope they shine through in the final product.

We chose the octopus because Muay Thai is the well known art of 8 limbs!Obviously our octopus is trans and a badass. Cute and deadly. Prey and predator, super smart and one of the only animals documented punching others out of spite (just cos they can).

As our fantastic designer @hoarse_rama pointed out, octopuses camouflage and use their surroundings to their advantage when they are in danger. They understand very well that self defence is so much more than physical dominance.

We hope you like our little friend. And we still love our patron saints, an important part of our history. We remain inspired by their actions:

Bender Defenders does provide an answer to hate crime – but not in the way people think

**the below article was published in Dope Magazine in May 2023. We are reproducing it here so that as many people as possible can read it. We encourage you to buy a copy of Dope to support them, and read other amazing pieces written by community groups!**

Bender Defenders was started as a response to rising hate crime. This project has helped over 800 queer and trans people feel safer, more confident, more supported by a community. But not in the way it was originally intended to.

We don’t want to centre ourselves around other people’s hate. We want to build queer community, queer joy and queer strength.

The original idea was for a roving group of trained queers who would challenge homophobes and transphobes and keep the streets safe for our community. It’s a powerful fantasy, one that brings a lot of people to their first few classes. But really, this fantasy came from a place of hurt, anger and fear – and that’s not what Bender Defenders is about. We don’t want to centre ourselves around other people’s hate. We want to build queer community, queer joy and queer strength.

Our regular classes are a space where people can feel powerful, be vulnerable and realise how much they are capable of. In our self-defence workshops, we hold space for people to unpack this deeply flawed concept, understand its limitations and feel more confident in drawing on a range of skills – physical and non-physical – to keep themselves safe.

People say these classes are a huge boost to their mental and physical health and really help manage their anxiety. Learning Muay Thai is an amazing way to keep yourself safer, and to heal from the damage hate crime causes.

It’s useful to have some moves in the back pocket in case you have no other option – any training is better than no training. Just as importantly, training a martial art, even casually, helps you understand the limits of what you can do, so that turning to non-physical approaches feels more like an empowering choice.

We also find ourselves frequently challenging three central myths around self-defence:

  1. If you really want to be able to fight, you need to rewire your brain’s instinctive responses to violence and danger. One or two classes a week aren’t going to cut it.
  2. Engaging in physical violence is almost never the most effective way to keep yourself safe. And ‘self defence’ doesn’t give you a free pass to do whatever you want to someone who has wronged you – you need to understand the law before you start swinging.
  3. Learning how to defend yourself doesn’t make the harm caused by hate crime go away. There’s no way to experience something like that and come out unscathed. Again, the fantasy of somehow ‘coming out on top’ – whatever that might mean – is a powerful one, but a fantasy nonetheless. Like the original idea for Bender Defenders, it often comes from a place of hurt and anger. For us, part of learning self defence is finding ways to heal from that.

Muay Thai helps us release our emotions, reconnect with our bodies on our own terms, and feel powerful in a world where many of us don’t get that very often. Experiencing this week after week, alongside fellow queer and trans people, is transformative. It creates a strong, supportive community who love and believe in themselves and each other.

In fact, when our regulars talk about why they love Bender Defenders, the most common response isn’t about hate crime or feeling safer or managing their health – it’s that they found community here.

Ultimately that’s what we want. We build community, because we are stronger together than alone. Bender Defenders does challenge hate crime – just not how it was originally intended to.

We’re holding a fundraiser!

INFO FOR WRESTLERS

  • How it works: you’ll both be covered in baby-oil before wrestling for 90 seconds. You get points every time your opponents’ shoulders touch the floor. Most points wins!
  • If you’d like to wrestle, bring a towel for after and clothes you’re happy to wrestle in (baby oil may stain some types of clothes).
  • Wear whatever you’re comfortable in! It works best if you’ve got some bare skin for the oil to stick to. Previously people have wrestled in anything from a vest and shorts to a funky wrestling outfit. Costumes encouraged but not required.
  • Please read our wrestling ground-rules for more info.

Spectators are warmly welcomed and encouraged! Come watch some oily benders in action and show your face at the hottest queer night in town.

WHY?  We’re raising money for Bender Defenders. Our coaches are incredibly passionate about bringing martial arts to the queer and trans community. They have been volunteering their coaching time, with all funds from ticket sales going towards venue hire. As the classes have grown in popularity this model is no longer sustainable.

All money raised will go towards buying more equipment and paying the coaches for their time so that costs for the classes can stay low. Find out more on our crowdfunder page.

ACCESS INFO:  The event will be a mixture of seated and standing. If you need to sit, we will make sure there is a chair for you. The entrance to the venue has a ramp leading up to two double doors. There is a small (1 inch) lip between the ramp and the pavement. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet on the ground floor of the venue. The event is being held in the basement, which is accessible by a flight of stairs, or by a lift. There is a small outside area. Please message the event organisers to discuss any particular access needs in more detail.

WHAT IS OIL WRESTLING?

Oil wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the world. It was performed by ancient communities 4,500 years ago in Thrace and the Balkans.

The oil was first introduced to ensure fairness, making the wrestling about the tactic rather than the wrestler’s size or strength. The addition of oil also makes it difficult to stand and get any grip, as the sweat mixes with the oil. It ensures the match is fair, as both opponents are at a disadvantage allowing people of different weights to battle.

Wrestlers oil one another prior to matches as a demonstration of balance and mutual respect.

Oil wrestling can be traced back to ancient Sumer and Babylon. Greco Roman traditions also point to the practice of oil wrestling.

At the event we are not aiming to recreate any traditional oil wrestling sports, but it’s still good to know where oil wrestling comes from.

We are Crowdfunding!!

Bender Defenders has been running for 3 years now.

Since then, we have trained over 40 people per week; we had to cap our numbers because so many kept turning up: there is a growing demand for our training. Our amazing trainers want to go more full-time, so we need your help! We are not interested in getting sponsorship from any corporation that exploits their workers or land (see Nike or Adidas), and we will not accept donations from them.

Our classes are not just about self defence: they are mainly about joy, community building and providing a space where queer people can release burdens and anxiety through movements. We make sure that trans-feminine people in particular have access to our spaces as a response to the hostile movement to exclude them from competitive sports.

We hope to raise £12,000 to support our trainers to hold a year’s worth of regular training for cheap prices for our community so they are accessible for all. We have raised 1/2 of the £££ so far! Please help us to keep going!
